1808 — Sokoto jihad takes Zazzau. Mallam Musa deposes Sarkin Zazzau Muhammadu Makau, who flees south with his court to found the Habe Emirate of Abuja (Suleja). The Hausa Sarkin Zazzau lineage is permanently exiled; the throne passes to four Fulani houses.
1810s–1890s — Southern Kaduna slave-raiding. Zazzau and Jema'a emirates raid the Atyap, Bajju, Ham, Adara, Kagoro and Ninzo highlands almost continuously for slaves traded to Kano, Bida and the Trans-Saharan caravans. 1902 — Fall of Zaria. Colonel Morland's WAFF column takes the city without major resistance.
1903 — Kano falls (3 Feb); Battle of Burmi (27 July) kills Sultan Attahiru I in flight.
1920 — British depose Emir Aliyu dan Sidi of Zazzau for "misrule"; replace with Dallatu.

1945 — Kaduna phase of the COLA general strike (Imoudu); railway and PWD workers in Kaduna paralyse the Northern administration for 45 days.Economic Shock Cycle

15 Jan 1966 — Coup at Kaduna. Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu kills Premier Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, his senior wife Hafsatu and three retainers at the Premier's Lodge, Kaduna. The northern half of the January 15 1966 coup; in many readings, the proximate trigger of the entire post-independence cycle.
29 July 1966 — Counter-coup. Lt-Col Murtala Muhammed and Major Theophilus Danjuma execute Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi (at Ibadan) and Lt-Col Adekunle Fajuyi; the operational headquarters of the counter-coup is 1 Brigade, Kaduna. Lt-Col Yakubu Gowon becomes Head of State.
May–Sept 1966 — Anti-Igbo pogroms in Kaduna and Zaria. Sabon Gari quarters of both cities sacked; an estimated 5,000–8,000 Igbo killed across the North in the May and September waves; over a million flee east. Direct precipitant of Biafran secession.
1967–70 — Kaduna is the rear headquarters of 1 Division (Hassan Katsina, then Mohammed Shuwa); the city escapes fighting.
1971 — Burning of the Sardauna's library at Kaduna by the new military elite (the "Kaduna Mafia" generation).
1978 — "Ali Must Go" protests at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. National Union of Nigerian Students mobilisation against tuition fees imposed by Education Minister Col. Ahmadu Ali. ABU Zaria is the epicentre; at least 3 students killed nationally; ABU campus shut for the term.Economic Shock Cycle

March 1987 — Kafanchan riots. Started at the College of Education Kafanchan over a Christian/Muslim student dispute on a campus prayer-and-preaching meeting; spreads to Zaria, Kaduna, Funtua, Katsina, Kano. At least 25 killed (Kafanchan Disturbances Commission, Justice Donli, 1987); 152 churches and 5 mosques burnt. 30 May–31 May 1992 — Zangon Kataf crisis. Started as a dispute over the relocation of the Zango weekly market (which the indigenous Atyap argued was a Hausa-Fulani trading enclave imposed by Zaria over their land). Reprisal attacks reach Kaduna and Zaria cities on 15–18 May. An estimated 1,500 killed (Cudjoe Commission of Inquiry; some Christian sources estimate 2,000+). Maj-Gen Zamani Lekwot (Atyap, retired) and six others sentenced to death by Justice Benedict Okadigbo Tribunal in 1993; sentences commuted; Lekwot released by Abacha in 1995. 1992–1996 — Recurring Kaduna-city Christian–Muslim violence.
23 Sep 1987 — Katsina State excised from Kaduna; no violence.

Feb 2000 — Sharia riots. Governor Ahmad Sani Yerima of Zamfara adopts Sharia in October 1999; Governor Ahmed Makarfi of Kaduna proposes Kaduna adoption in February 2000. Massive Christian protest in Kaduna city (21 Feb 2000) is met with Muslim counter-mobilisation. Over 1,000 killed in three days (Human Rights Watch figure: 1,000–2,000). November 2002 — ThisDay/Miss World riots. Lagos newspaper *ThisDay* publishes Isioma Daniel's article suggesting the Prophet Muhammad would have approved of a Miss World contestant. Nov 2008–Jan 2010 — Spillover from Jos crises; sporadic Kaduna-southern violence.
18 April 2011 — Post-election violence. After the announcement of Goodluck Jonathan's victory over Muhammadu Buhari, the worst single post-election violence in Nigerian history erupts across the North. Kaduna is the epicentre. At least 800 killed nationally (HRW), including the National Youth Service Corps members who were election officials (10 NYSC members killed in Bauchi but several also in Kaduna). 12–14 Dec 2015 — Zaria Shia massacre / Zaria killings. Nigerian Army Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai's convoy is blocked by an Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) procession at Husainiyya, Gyellesu, Zaria. The Army storms the IMN compound and the Hussainiyya Baqiyatullah. At least 348 IMN members killed (Kaduna State Judicial Commission of Inquiry, the Garba Commission, 2016); IMN puts the figure above 1,000 — most buried in mass graves at Mando. Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenah are wounded and detained without trial until 2021. No prosecutions of any soldier.Impunity Loop

Birnin Gwari LGA — the largest single artisanal-gold-producing local government in Nigeria — becomes the headquarters of the north-western banditry economy. 11 Feb 2019 — Adara crisis in Kajuru LGA: ≈ 130 killed in coordinated Fulani-on-Adara attacks days before the Presidential election; ten Fulani villages later attacked in revenge; Governor el-Rufai sets the death toll at 130, opposition disputes.

28 March 2022 — Abuja–Kaduna train attack. Bandits / ISWAP attackers detonate explosives on the Abuja–Kaduna Standard Gauge railway near Katari; storm the stranded train.
