Overview#
Kaduna's resource base is industrial-minerals + agro-industrial more than hydrocarbon: gold (Birnin Gwari, Maganda), gemstones (sapphire, ruby, tourmaline in the Kafanchan-Jema'a belt), clay (Karu), the Kaduna Refinery (NNPC), and a long ginger / cotton / soybean / maize agricultural base. Birnin Gwari has been the country's most violent artisanal-gold frontier since 2018.
Geology & Deposits#
Gold. Birnin Gwari, Maganda, Maraban Rido, Galadima — the southern Zamfara-Niger gold belt extends into Kaduna; Birnin Gwari LGA is the largest single artisanal-gold producing local government in Nigeria. Sapphire, ruby, aquamarine, tourmaline. Kafanchan-Jema'a-Kachia plateau pegmatites — internationally significant; the Nigerian Mining Cadastre lists Kafanchan as a "gemstone city." Iron-ore. Birnin Gwari (titaniferous), Maraba. Asbestos, kyanite, mica, clay. Various small. Hydrocarbons. None native; the Kaduna Refining & Petrochemical Co (KRPC), 110,000 bpd, was built 1980 to refine crude piped via the Escravos-Warri-Kaduna pipeline; rehabilitation underway under Tinubu administration. Agricultural produce. Ginger (Kaduna State is Nigeria's #1 ginger producer), cotton, soybean, maize, tomato (Igabi LGA).

Host-Community & Revenue#
No oil derivation. Mining royalties from gold are in theory remitted to the Federation Account; informal flows through Birnin Gwari–Niger Republic smuggling corridors are very large. The Kaduna gold-and-banditry crisis is the most acute resource-and-security overlap in the country.
Current Status#
Producing: artisanal gold (Birnin Gwari, Maganda — unsafe); gemstones (Kafanchan); ginger and cotton. Rehabilitating: KRPC. Threatened: Birnin Gwari and Kachia by banditry.
