March 1987 — Kafanchan riots. Started at the College of Education Kafanchan over a Christian/Muslim student dispute on a campus prayer-and-preaching meeting; spreads to Zaria, Kaduna, Funtua, Katsina, Kano. At least 25 killed (Kafanchan Disturbances Commission, Justice Donli, 1987); 152 churches and 5 mosques burnt. 30 May–31 May 1992 — Zangon Kataf crisis. Started as a dispute over the relocation of the Zango weekly market (which the indigenous Atyap argued was a Hausa-Fulani trading enclave imposed by Zaria over their land). Reprisal attacks reach Kaduna and Zaria cities on 15–18 May. An estimated 1,500 killed (Cudjoe Commission of Inquiry; some Christian sources estimate 2,000+). Maj-Gen Zamani Lekwot (Atyap, retired) and six others sentenced to death by Justice Benedict Okadigbo Tribunal in 1993; sentences commuted; Lekwot released by Abacha in 1995.
