- 1836 — Battle of Gawakuke. Sokoto's Sultan Bello defeats Kebbi; Sarkin Kebbi Karari killed. Argungu becomes the capital-in-exile.
- 1903 — British WAFF takes Argungu and Birnin Kebbi without resistance.

- April 1980 — Bakolori Massacre (technically Sokoto State, but the affected farmers are Kebbi-Sokoto Kebbawa peasants displaced by the Bakolori Irrigation Project; 380+ killed by Nigerian Mobile Police when farmers resist the dam's land seizure). The single largest peasant massacre in Nigerian Fourth Republic prehistory.
