Overview#
Kebbi is overwhelmingly an agricultural-resource state — the Kebbi-Argungu rice axis is the country's most-publicised rice-self-sufficiency front. The state also hosts the historic Argungu Fishing Festival (which is a resource-cultural event built on the Sokoto-Rima river system), and on the mineral side, gold around Zuru, salt at Yauri, and limestone at Bin Yauri.
Geology & Deposits#
Gold. Zuru-Sakaba-Wasagu southern belt — the northern margin of the Zamfara gold field, with the same artisanal-and-bandit overlay. Salt. Yauri, Koko — historic Niger-bend brines, traded since the trans-Saharan era. Limestone, gypsum, kaolin. Bin Yauri, Wasagu. Hydrocarbons. None. Agricultural produce. Rice (Argungu, Bagudo, Birnin Kebbi — the Kebbi-Lagos Rice Initiative 2015 integration), wheat (fadama), millet, sorghum, fish (Argungu Festival catch), onion, garlic. Livestock. Host-Community & Revenue#
No derivation. Rice-and-fadama programmes are the principal federal-investment channel; the Niger Basin Development Authority is the primary water-management institution.
Current Status#
Producing: rice (now a continental-scale milled output), wheat, fish, onion, gold (artisanal, Zuru), salt (artisanal, Yauri). Threatened: Zuru-Sakaba security is increasingly degraded by banditry.
