Architecture-trained Kaduna State governor (2007–10) who became Goodluck Jonathan's VP after the Yar'Adua succession. Chaired the National Economic Council through the 2011–14 commodity boom and the 2014 GDP rebasing.
Mohammed Namadi Sambo (b. 2 Aug 1954, Zaria) trained as an architect at ABU Zaria and ran a Kaduna practice before entering politics. He was elected Governor of Kaduna State in April 2007 on the PDP platform, serving until his elevation in May 2010.
Following the death of President Umaru Yar'Adua on 5 May 2010, the constitutional vacancy at the VP slot — Goodluck Jonathan having moved up — was filled by Sambo's nomination, on the recommendation of northern PDP governors seeking zonal balance.
As VP he chaired the National Economic Council and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company board through the unbundling of PHCN and the 2013 DisCo privatisations. He carried the Jonathan ticket into the 2015 election and lost to APC.
