PRODA Enugu — Ceramic Insulators and Refractory Bricks from Nigerian Kaolin

The Projects Development Institute, Enugu, ran pilot production of high-tension ceramic insulators and high-alumina refractory bricks from Nigerian Ozubulu and Nteje kaolin from the 1980s — products that work, that meet specification, and that are not in the procurement pipeline of any Nigerian electricity utility or steel plant.

PRODA Enugu holds, alongside its chemical-engineering mandate, the federal mandate for ceramics process development. Its principal product lines in pilot production: 11 kV and 33 kV high-tension porcelain insulators for the distribution network; high-alumina refractory bricks for industrial furnaces; acid-proof ceramic tiles for chemical-plant flooring; and a range of laboratory and tableware ceramics.

The materials base is Nigerian: kaolin from Ozubulu (Anambra) and Nteje, ball clay from Owo (Ondo), and feldspar from Egbe (Kogi). The bench-scale and pilot-scale firing data are documented across PRODA's annual reports and in the *Journal of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers*.

Nigeria imports nearly all the porcelain insulators on its electricity distribution network from China and India, and nearly all its refractory bricks for the Ajaokuta (when restarted), Delta Steel, and Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) plants. PRODA's pilot output meets specification; the procurement does not buy.

It is, again, the same pattern: the science works, the industrial bridge does not.
