Founded by Decree 35 of 1990 (with operational roots back to 1981 as the Federal Agricultural Mechanization Centre), the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM), Ilorin holds the federal mandate for the engineering of locally-appropriate agricultural machinery. Its prototype-to-production pipeline runs through a workshop in Idofian, Kwara.
Among its certified designs in actual use: the NCAM Cassava Grater Mk-IV (powered grater for fufu and gari production cooperatives — several hundred units in service across the south-east); the NCAM rice de-stoner (used in the smallholder rice-milling clusters of Ebonyi and Ekiti); the NCAM multi-crop thresher (for sorghum, millet, maize and rice — adopted across the SAFGRAD network in northern Nigeria); the mobile palm-fruit digester; the groundnut decorticator.
Unlike most of the catalogue, NCAM's products are not in journal abstracts — they are in dusty workshops in Kwara, Niger, Ebonyi, Anambra. The institute's annual certification programme tests and registers locally-fabricated copies of the designs by private workshops at Idofian, Owo and Kaduna.
What constrains the programme is the standard one — capital for tooling and standardised quality control across the fabrication network — but the design output is one of the cleanest demonstrations in the catalogue that Nigerian engineering, when targeted at problems Nigerian farmers actually have, produces things people actually buy.
