Lagos State · Crisis deep dive

Second Republic (1979–1983)

  • 22 May 1980 — NEPA / Tariff Riots, Lagos Mainland. A 50% electricity-tariff increase triggers stonings of NEPA Marina HQ and Ikeja Distribution Office; 7 dead in Mushin.
  • 5–11 Apr 1981 — Bar Beach Show executions resumed. The Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Decree's televised executions at Victoria Island's Bar Beach (suspended 1975, revived 1981) draw weekly 20,000-strong crowds; civil-society protests led by Aka Bashorun and the NBA Lagos branch produce nothing.
  • 15 Aug – 30 Sep 1983 — Federal election violence. UPN/NPN clashes across Mushin, Surulere, Ojo; the FEDECO 1983 returns from Lagos State (NPN sweep) are the proximate trigger for the 31 Dec 1983 Buhari coup.Election Crisis Pattern
