12 Jun – 8 Aug 1993 — June 12 election & annulment (Lagos epicentre). MKO Abiola (SDP) sweeps Lagos State with 883,965 votes (vs Tofa's 142,482). Babangida's annulment 23 Jun triggers seven weeks of street protests centred on Yaba, Ojuelegba, Maryland and Surulere; ≥100 killed in Lagos by 8 Aug (Civil Liberties Organisation count). 4 Jul – 4 Sep 1994 — NUPENG/PENGASSAN strike. Petrol-workers walk out demanding the restoration of Abiola's mandate; Lagos petrol queues, Murtala Muhammed Airport shut intermittently. Abacha proscribes both unions and the NLC 17 Aug, jails Frank Kokori (NUPENG GS) without trial until June 1998.
