Bayelsa State · Crisis deep dive

Civil War & oil-boom military (1967–1979)

  • 1967–1970 — Biafran War. The central Ijaw (Bayelsa today) sit on the federal side after Boro's intervention; the eastern Ijaw (Kalabari, Bonny) are caught between the lines. Coastal raids and naval blockade devastate Brass and Nembe trade for three years.
  • 1970s gas-flare era — Shell-BP and Agip begin continuous gas flaring at Oloibiri, Ogbia and Nembe; flares burn 24/7 for decades. World Bank later ranks Nigeria the second-largest gas flarer in the world after Russia.
