Bayelsa State · Crisis deep dive

Late colonial · First Republic (1929–1966)

  • 15 January 1956 — Oloibiri-1 strikes oil in Ogbia Division; production begins 1958. Communities receive no equity, no royalties, and no environmental protection — the original sin of the Nigerian oil economy.
  • 23 February – 7 March 1966 — Twelve-Day Revolution. Isaac Adaka Boro, Sam Owonaro and Nottingham Dick proclaim the Niger Delta Republic at Kaiama. Federal troops crush the rising; Boro is tried for treason and later pardoned. He becomes the patron saint of every later Ijaw militant.
