The 2021 Mental Health Act repealed the colonial Lunacy Act 1958 — sixty-three years after independence. The 2022 revised Policy operationalises the Act through integration of mental health into Primary Health Care, decriminalisation of suicide attempts, and protections for involuntary admission. Implementation is uneven; the country has approximately 250 practising psychiatrists for a population of 220 million.
