Integration of Almajiri pupils into formal schooling system; intermittent implementation.

Statutory basis

Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education Act 2004; CFRN §18

Designed to integrate the estimated 9.5 million Almajiri pupils of Northern Nigeria into the formal basic-education system via the Almajiri Model Boarding School programme. 165 model schools were built under the Jonathan administration (2010–15); fewer than half were fully operational by 2024. The policy was effectively suspended under Buhari and revived under Tinubu via the 2023 Ministry of Education roadmap.
