Louis Edet

First Nigerian Inspector-General of Police. Force headquarters in Abuja is named Louis Edet House in his honour.

The record

Louis Orok Edet was the first indigenous Inspector-General of Police, appointed in 1964 by Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa after a career that included service with the colonial-era Nigeria Police Force.

He led the Force through the turbulent run-up to the First Republic's collapse, including the 1964 federal election crisis and the Western Region 'Wild Wild West' riots of 1965, until the 15 January 1966 coup.

The Nigeria Police Force headquarters at Shehu Shagari Way, Central Area, Abuja, is named Louis Edet House in his memory.
