Prof. Chinua Achebe
Twice offered and twice declined the CFR (2004 under Obasanjo; 2011 under Jonathan), citing the politics of his native Anambra State.
The record
Chinua Achebe (1930–2013) was the most internationally celebrated Nigerian novelist of the 20th century. Things Fall Apart (1958) has sold over twenty million copies in fifty-plus languages.
He twice publicly declined Nigeria's CFR — in 2004 under Obasanjo, and again in 2011 under Jonathan — citing what he called the 'dangerous state of affairs' in his native Anambra State and the wider failure of Nigerian governance.
