First Nigerian world boxing champion. Won the WBC featherweight title by KO over Cherif Hamia in Paris, 24 June 1957.

The record

Okon Bassey Asuquo, 'Hogan Kid Bassey' (1932–1998), of Calabar, won the WBC featherweight title by knockout over Cherif Hamia in Paris on 24 June 1957 — the first Nigerian to win a world boxing title of any kind. He defended the belt against Ricardo Moreno before losing it to Davey Moore in 1959. Retired in 1959; coached the Nigerian Olympic boxing team in the 1960s.
