The record

Alex Ekwueme (1932–2017), architect and lawyer, served as Vice-President under Shehu Shagari (1 October 1979 – 31 December 1983) until the Buhari coup. Detained for 20 months. He convened the G-34 in 1998 and was a founding chairman of the PDP. He contested the PDP presidential primary in 1999 and again in 2003.
