Aisha Halilu Buhari (née Halilu, born 17 February 1971 in Adamawa State) was Hon. First Lady of the Federal Republic from 29 May 2015 to 29 May 2023, throughout the two-term presidency of Muhammadu Buhari. Of Adamawa Fulani lineage on both sides — daughter of Muhammadu Halilu and grand-niece of Sir Kashim Ibrahim (Governor of Northern Nigeria 1962–66) — she was educated at the Federal Government Girls' College Bida (1985–90), the Adamawa State Polytechnic (Diploma in Beauty Therapy), and trained as a cosmetologist in London. She married Muhammadu Buhari in 1989 when he was 47 and she was 18; she is his second wife (the first, Safinatu Yusuf, was divorced in 1988 and died in 2006). The marriage produced five children — Aisha, Halima, Yusuf, Zahra and Hanan.
Her First Ladyship is the most publicly conflicted in Fourth Republic history. She broke open the unwritten convention of First-Lady silence with her BBC Hausa interview of 14 October 2016 — given in London while her husband was on a private visit — in which she announced that 'the Buhari government has been hijacked' by a small unelected cabal (a coded reference to Mamman Daura, Chief of Staff Abba Kyari, and Personal Assistant Sabiu 'Tunde' Yusuf), that the President 'does not know 45 of his ministers', and that she might not campaign for his re-election in 2019. Buhari's response — delivered standing beside Angela Merkel at the German Chancellery — was that 'I don't know what party she belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen, my living room, and the other room.' The episode produced a global news cycle and remains the most consequential public spousal dissent in Nigerian executive history.
She formalised her dissent through the Future Assured Programme (her flagship maternal-and-child-health intervention, building primary health-care centres across all 36 states), the Aisha Buhari Foundation, the Aisha Buhari Invitational Football Tournament, and the 'Aliko Dangote–Aisha Buhari' Adolescent Health Programme. She published The Essential Aisha (Premium Books, 2021), a 220-page volume mixing memoir, programme record and quietly devastating commentary on the President's inner circle. The Yusuf Buhari motorcycle accident of December 2017 (her son nearly killed in a 200 km/h Lagos crash) produced a further public rift over his medical evacuation; her direct accusation in 2019 that Mamman Daura's daughter Fatima had taken over Aso Rock's domestic management produced the 'Cousin v Wife' tabloid drama of June 2019.
Since 29 May 2023 she has lived at the Buhari family compound at Daura, Katsina State and at Asokoro, Abuja. The Future Assured Programme has continued under the Aisha Buhari Foundation. Her daughter Zahra Buhari-Indimi married into the Indimi oil-services dynasty of Maiduguri; her daughter Hanan Buhari operates an Abuja photography studio. She gave a substantive valedictory interview to TheCable (March 2024) defending her record and declining to comment on Bola Tinubu's first year. She is the only Nigerian First Lady to have publicly broken with her husband while still in office and emerged with her political brand intact.
