Ibom Air

Status: Operating (Akwa Ibom State, 100%).

Ownership

Indigenous Nigerian ownership

Why it is on record

Wholly owned by the Akwa Ibom State Government — the only state-owned airline in Nigeria since the 1980s and the most successful state commercial airline in African post-liberalisation history. Built around the underused Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo.

Record held

Most successful state-government-owned airline in Nigerian post-liberalisation history; only currently-operating sub-national airline in Nigeria.

Deep dive

Ibom Air — wholly owned by the Akwa Ibom State Government — commenced scheduled operations in June 2019 as the first Nigerian state-government-owned airline. Built on a clean-sheet fleet of CRJ-900 / A220 narrowbodies and a single-class product, the airline has won the OTA / domestic on-time-performance and customer-experience metrics consistently since launch and is the institutional answer to the question of whether sub-sovereign Nigerian aviation can succeed.
