The record
Aliyu Mai-Bornu (1919–1970), a Kanuri economist from Borno, was the first Nigerian Governor of the CBN, taking office on 25 July 1963.
His tenure included the 1 January 1968 currency-conversion exercise that exchanged Nigerian Pounds for new notes — designed to render Biafran-held pre-war currency worthless.
