The continuous Lagos rainfall record begins with the colonial Meteorological Office station at Marina (operational from 1892) and is best summarised in I.L. Anyadike's 'Rainfall over Lagos, Nigeria, 1892–1987' (Weather, Vol. 49, 1994). Across that 95-year series, the longest documented continuous-rain episodes were 3–4 day events in the peak Atlantic monsoon weeks of late June and early July; no seven-day continuous-rain event is recorded in the colonial archive. The modern Lagos 'seven days of rain' is therefore a climate-era phrase, not a historical one.
The phrase entered Nigerian public memory on 24 June 2012, when NIMET's Central Forecast Unit (Oshodi) — through forecaster Abayomi Oyegoke — issued a formal advisory that Lagos would 'soon experience a seven-day rainfall.' By that point Lagos had already absorbed 570 mm of rain in the first half of 2012, and the city was still recovering from the 10 July 2011 super-storm: a single 17-hour continuous downpour that delivered approximately 264 mm of rain in one day (the Nigeria Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research called it 'one month's rain in one day'), flooded Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Lekki Phase 1 and Ikoyi, killed at least 25 people across Lagos and Ibadan, and displaced an estimated 5,000 households. The 'build an ark' headline in Daily Post (24 June 2012) crystallised the new vocabulary.

- 1947 — Lagos colonial peak. The Public Works Department records the highest single-day colonial-era rainfall at Marina at ~180 mm, anchoring the drainage master-plan still partly in use today. No multi-day continuous-rain episode is recorded in the Anyadike 1892–1987 series.
- 26 August 1948 — Ibadan. Three days of continuous rain (24–26 August) burst the Ogunpa channel for the first recorded time, killing dozens and flooding Dugbe and Oje markets. Earliest documented multi-day continuous-rain disaster in colonial Nigeria.
- 31 August 1980 — Ogunpa Flood, Ibadan. ★ The single worst rain-driven disaster on the Nigerian record. A 12-hour cloudburst delivered an estimated 245–316 mm of rain on a city already saturated from four prior days of rain. The Ogunpa River broke its banks, sweeping through Dugbe, Oke-Ado and Mokola; the official death toll was 300+, unofficial counts exceeded 500; 50,000 displaced; ₦25 million in 1980 damages. The Ogunpa Disaster remains the benchmark by which all later Nigerian flood-rain events are measured.
- July 2001 — Kano. Five days of continuous rain (3–7 July) breached the Tiga Dam spillway and flooded the old city; documented in the NEMA 2001 annual report.
- 10 July 2011 — Lagos super-storm. 264 mm in 17 hours; 25 dead, 5,000 households displaced; the post-colonial precedent for the 'one month's rain in one day' phrase.
- August–October 2012 — National floods. Five weeks of continuous rain across the Niger–Benue basin, compounded by Lagdo Dam release in Cameroon. 363 dead, 2.1 million displaced across 30 states; the largest flood event in Nigerian history by displacement, though not by single-day rainfall intensity.
- 5–8 July 2017 — Lekki four-day rain. ~310 mm cumulative over four days; Lekki Phase 1, VGC, Ajah submerged. ERA/FoEN Field Report #383.
- July 2020 — Lekki 72-hour rain. Three continuous days; Lekki underwater for 72 hours.
- September–November 2022 — Worst national flood season since 2012. Months of continuous rain + the September Lagdo Dam release. 612 dead, 1.4 million displaced, 200,000+ homes destroyed across 34 states (NEMA final tally, November 2022). Bayelsa, Kogi, Anambra and Jigawa worst hit; the Lokoja confluence stayed above the 11.8 m flood mark for 41 consecutive days.
- July 2022 — Lagos–Ibadan corridor. Five days of continuous rain; Lagos–Ibadan Expressway impassable; Ibadan recorded its highest 24-hour rainfall since 1980.
- September 2024 — Maiduguri (Alau Dam collapse). Seven days of continuous rain in the upper Komadugu Yobe basin collapsed the Alau Dam on 10 September; 40% of Maiduguri submerged, 414,000 displaced, 150+ dead. The first time a Nigerian state capital was inundated by a dam failure triggered by multi-day rain.
- June–July 2024 — Lagos. Three continuous days of rain across Mile 12, Ikorodu and Ajegunle; recurring 'seven-day rain' advisory issued by NIMET on 4 July 2024.
The political point is that the Lagos coastal megacity — built on reclaimed lagoon — was designed by the colonial Public Works Department for a rainfall regime that no longer exists. The 1947 colonial drainage master-plan assumed peak monsoon rainfall of ~180 mm/day; the 2011 storm delivered 264 mm in 17 hours and the 2017 multi-day event delivered ~310 mm cumulative. Every subsequent Lagos State drainage masterplan (2009, 2013, 2019) has been overtaken by the next storm before completion. The 'seven days of rain' is, in effect, the climate-era name for what was previously called the 'July monsoon peak' — a Fourth-Republic recurrence, not a colonial-era baseline, and one of the most legible Nigerian symptoms of West African coastal climate change.
