Independence & First Republic (1960–1966)

  • 15 January 1966 — Bauchi loses its most prominent son when PM Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa is abducted and killed in the Nzeogwu–Ifeajuna coup; his body is found at Otta on 22 January. The killing is the single most important Northern grievance behind the 29 July 1966 counter-coup and the 1966 anti-Igbo pogroms.Northern Abandonment Cycle
  • 29 May / September–October 1966 Pogroms — Bauchi town and Azare are among the documented sites of anti-Igbo killings; estimated 200+ dead across the state, several thousand refugees evacuated by rail to the East.
