15 January 1966 — Bauchi loses its most prominent son when PM Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa is abducted and killed in the Nzeogwu–Ifeajuna coup; his body is found at Otta on 22 January. The killing is the single most important Northern grievance behind the 29 July 1966 counter-coup and the 1966 anti-Igbo pogroms.Northern Abandonment Cycle
