*★ pivotal pre-colonial polity · ♀ confirmed female office.*
Anambra has the densest concentration of Igbo monarchical traditions, ranging from priestly Nri kingship to the Edo-derived Onitsha *obi-ship*.
1. Eze Nri of Agukwu-Nri — Kingdom of Nri ★#
Oldest continuous Igbo kingship; ritual rather than territorial. Each Eze Nri was installed by a long fast and pilgrimage to Aguleri. Reigning: HRM Eze Nri Enwelana II, Obidiegwu Onyeso (since 1988). Era I/III: The Kingdom of Nri Crown action: No RNC treaty (the Eze Nri's authority was ritual, not commercial); colonial pacification 1911.
2. Obi of Onitsha — Kingdom of Onitsha ★#
Founded c. 1630 by Eze Chima from Benin; the only Igbo kingdom of Edo origin. The Obi sat at the head of the *Ndichie* council. Reigning: HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, Obi of Onitsha (since 2002). Era I/III: Benin Kingdom Crown action: 1884 RNC treaty signed at Onitsha; the town became an RNC trading post in 1885 and a Native Court in 1900.
Consorts & female monarchs of the Obi of Onitsha#
*The Obi's senior wife is titled Lolo (Adimabua when she is the consort of the reigning Obi). The Omu — distinct from the Lolo — was historically the female monarch of the market, the highest titled woman in Onitsha-Igbo society, paralleling rather than subordinate to the Obi.*
Omu Nwagboka (fl. c. 1884–1887)#
The Omu at the moment of first British contact at Onitsha. Negotiated with the Royal Niger Company on behalf of the Onitsha market women. The last Omu installed before the office was suppressed under colonial rule; the title was revived only in the 1980s.
Lolo Josephine Okosi II (fl. 1931–1970)#
Senior wife of Obi Okosi II (r. 1931–1970). Founded the Lolo's school for orphaned girls at Inland Town, Onitsha (1952).
Lolo Nkechi Achebe (Adimabua, since 2002)#
Senior wife of Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the current Obi of Onitsha (installed 14 May 2002). Cambridge-trained molecular biologist; chair of the Lolo Achebe Foundation, which runs maternal-health and girl-child education programmes across Onitsha North and South. The only sitting Lolo with a documented international scientific career. *Source: BusinessDay, Vanguard (2002–2024).*
Omu Martha Dunkwu (since 2007)#
The reviving Omu of Anioma/Onitsha-Ado region, installed at Okpanam (Delta side of the river) — a 21st-century restoration of the pre-colonial Omu institution after a century of dormancy. Adjacent to but distinct from the Onitsha Lolo lineage.
3. Eze Aguleri — Aguleri (Igbo origin myth)#
Aguleri is the claimed cradle of all Igbo descent (the Eri tradition); the Eze Aguleri convenes the *Iri-Ji Ofala* of Nri.
4. Igwe Nteje / Ezeagidi of Awka — Awka (blacksmiths)#
Awka's smiths forged the iron currency (*umumu*) and weaponry that armed western Igboland against Benin and Aro slavers.
5. Obi of Aguleri-Otuocha / Igwe Umueri / Igwe Nnewi (Igwe Orizu)#
The Igwe Orizu of Nnewi is among the wealthiest contemporary Igbo thrones; Nnewi's Ibeto/Innoson industrial cluster is its modern legacy.
6. Igwe Nnobi / Igwe Ihiala / Eze Ogbaru#
Smaller Anambra thrones, mostly reorganised under the 1976 Anambra Traditional Rulers Edict.

Monetary conquest of the kingdoms#
The Aro diaspora houses in Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka were the inland nodes of the Bight of Biafra cowrie-credit network headquartered at Arochukwu. When the British crashed cowrie values from the 1840s and then dynamited the Long Juju in December 1901, the Onitsha and inland Aro merchant houses lost their clearing mechanism overnight — and the Onitsha market had to be rebuilt around sterling pricing on RNC terms.
