Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
The territory is the homeland of the Ibibio, Annang, Oron, Eket and Andoni-Obolo peoples — a constellation of clan republics whose senior religious authority was the Ekpe and Ekpo secret societies, with the Arochukwu Long Juju (shared with Abia) as the principal oracular court. The Obong of Calabar chieftaincy and the Awak Annang clan heads were post-1900 codifications of pre-existing council systems. The rotational Mbong Ibibio (Paramount Ruler of Ibibio Land) chairs the Akwa Ibom Traditional Rulers Council today.
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
Administered as part of Calabar Province, Southern Protectorate (1900–14), then Eastern Region (1939–60). The 1901–02 Aro Expedition and the 1925–28 Spirit Movement (a Niger Delta protest against British forest reservation) were the formative colonial encounters. The 1929 Aba Women's War touched the Annang flank at Ikot Abasi and Opobo, where eleven women were shot by Lt. Hill's force on 16 December 1929.

South-Eastern State / Cross River State (1967–1987)#
Created 27 May 1967 by Gowon's 12-state structure; renamed Cross River State in 1976. Covered present-day Akwa Ibom + Cross River. • 1967–1975 — Col. Ufot Joseph Akinwale / Col. Paul Omu, Military Governors of South-Eastern State (capital Calabar). • 1975–1976 — Col. Paul Omu, last Governor of South-Eastern State. • 1976–1978 — Cdre. Ben Ekpu. • 1978–1979 — Col. Tunde Ogbeha. • 1979–1983 — Dr. Clement Isong (NPN), former CBN Governor — Second Republic civilian Governor of Cross River. • 1983 — Sir Don Etiebet (NPN, brief). • 1984–1985 — Brig. Tunde Ogbeha (Buhari-era return). • 1985–1986 — Col. Edet Akpan Udo — last Cross River Governor before Akwa Ibom excision.
Akwa Ibom State military Administrators (1987–1999)#
Akwa Ibom was created on 23 September 1987 by Babangida, excised from Cross River. • 1987–1990 — Navy Capt. Edet Akpan Udo, founding Military Administrator. • 1990–1991 — Navy Cdre. Akin Aduwo. • 1991–1993 — Brig. Gen. Yakubu Tanko Ayuba. • 1993–1996 — Col. Ndubisi Nwobu. • 1996–1998 — Col. Musa Bamaiyi. • 1998–1999 — Navy Capt. John Ebiye.
Fourth Republic civilian Governors (1999–present)#
- 1999–2007 — Obong Victor Attah (PDP) — architect of the offshore-derivation litigation that produced the Onshore/Offshore Dichotomy Abolition Act 2004.
- 2007–2015 — Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio (PDP) — "Uncommon Transformation"; later Senate President from 2023.
- 2015–2023 — Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel (PDP) — Ibom Deep Sea Port pursuit; Ibom Air launched 2019.
- 2023–present — Pastor Umo Bassey Eno (PDP).
