Alhaji Muhammadu Dikko Yusufu was appointed IGP in 1975 following the Murtala Muhammed coup of 29 July 1975. He served through the assassination of Murtala (February 1976), the Obasanjo regime, and the transition to civilian rule in October 1979.
After retirement he founded the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy in Nigeria (MORDI) and was a presidential candidate in the 1999 election under the platform of the Movement for Democracy and Justice (MDJ).
