The record

Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun was appointed IGP in June 2023. His statutory retirement date became contested in 2024 when the National Assembly amended the Police Act to extend his tenure beyond the usual 35-year service ceiling, prompting suits at the Federal High Court.

He resigned on 24 February 2026 citing personal reasons; President Tinubu accepted the resignation and named Tunji Disu Acting IGP the same day.
