Deep dive

Guinness Nigeria Plc has brewed Foreign Extra Stout in Lagos since 1962 — the first Guinness brewery outside the British Isles. Controlled by Diageo (UK), it is the second-largest brewer in Nigeria by volume after Nigerian Breweries. The 2024 sale by Diageo of its 58% stake to Tolaram (Singapore-controlled, Lagos-based — the same group that owns Indomie Nigeria) was the largest IOC-to-indigenous brewery transaction in Nigerian history and a structural change in the ownership of the Nigerian alcohol industry.
