Why it is on record

Babawande Afolabi's low-cost ATR-72 operation; the first attempt at a true LCC model in Nigerian aviation. Routes contracted sharply after 2023 forex shock.

Record held

First post-2010 attempt at a Nigerian low-cost airline on the European LCC model.

Deep dive

Green Africa Airways, founded by Babawande Afolabi (a former McKinsey consultant) and launched commercially in June 2021 after a multi-year pre-launch process, was the most heavily venture-capitalised Nigerian start-up airline ever. Its all-ATR fleet and low-cost positioning made it the institutional test of whether a true Nigerian low-cost carrier could survive the FX and fuel-cost regime. By 2024 scheduled operations had been suspended.
