Why it is on record

Founded by High Chief Michael Ade Ojo (1938–2024) as Elizade Motors, the franchised distributor for Toyota Motor Corporation in Nigeria from 1971 — at the height of the post-oil-boom passenger-vehicle market. By the late 1980s Elizade was Toyota's single-largest African dealership and the dominant force in Nigerian new-car retail, holding the Toyota franchise alongside Lexus and (later) the Hyundai distributorship via Globe Motors. In 2012 the group founded Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin (Ondo State) — a fully private, NUC-accredited university funded entirely from automotive profits, today one of the better-resourced private universities in the country. Elizade is the model of the Nigerian dealership-to-philanthropy conglomerate.

Elizade Nigeria Limited was founded in 1971 by Chief Michael Ade-Ojo as the sole authorised Toyota distributor in Nigeria, in partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan. It is the original and longest-standing Toyota franchise in West Africa and the institutional foundation of the Ade-Ojo industrial portfolio. The 1995 Toyota Nigeria Limited joint venture extended the operation into manufacturing and assembly.

The Ade-Ojo family's subsequent diversification into hospitality (Ibis Hotel, Crossroads Hotel), tertiary education (Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, 2012), and real estate has made Elizade one of the largest indigenous family-owned industrial holdings in Nigeria, and Chief Ade-Ojo one of the founding figures of the Nigerian automotive trade.
