The record

President Buhari assumed the substantive Petroleum Resources portfolio at his inauguration on 29 May 2015 and held it through the end of his second term on 29 May 2023.

Ministers of State for Petroleum Resources during this period were Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu (November 2015 – May 2019), former NNPC GMD, and Chief Timipre Sylva (August 2019 – May 2023), former Governor of Bayelsa State.

The Petroleum Industry Act was signed into law by Buhari on 16 August 2021, dissolving NNPC and creating NNPC Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
