The record
Ibrahim Gambari (b. 24 November 1944, Ilorin) was Director-General of NIIA before his appointment as Foreign Minister at age 39 by the Buhari junta.
His tenure handled the diplomatic fallout of the Umaru Dikko crating incident (London, July 1984) — the failed attempt to abduct the exiled Second Republic Transport Minister and smuggle him back to Nigeria in a diplomatic crate.
After 1985 he returned to academia and then to diplomacy, serving as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN (1990–1999), UN Special Adviser on Africa, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, and finally Chief of Staff to President Buhari from 2020 to 2023.
