The record
Aja Nwachuku (1917–1996) of Abiriba, Abia State, presided over Nigeria's first post-Independence education plan, drawing on the recommendations of the 1960 Ashby Commission Report on Post-Secondary and Higher Education.
His tenure produced the legislation establishing the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (October 1960) — the first indigenous university — and the regional universities of Ahmadu Bello, Ife, and Lagos.
