The lineage runs: NEPU (1950, Aminu Kano) → PRP (1978, Aminu Kano & Balarabe Musa) → NAP (1983, Tunji Braithwaite) → NCP (1994, Gani Fawehinmi) → ANPP/CPC convergence (2003–11, Muhammadu Buhari) → APC (2013, fusion of the third force into the main opposition) → Labour Party Obidient movement (2022–23, Peter Obi).
The Obi candidacy of 2023 produced the highest third-force presidential vote in Nigerian history — 6.1m votes (25.4%), winning Lagos, FCT, Plateau, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Imo, Cross River, Edo, Delta and Ebonyi. The pattern is the same as Aminu Kano's NEPU in the North, Awolowo's UPN in 1979, Buhari's CPC in 2011 and Obi's LP in 2023: a clean-government brand that breaks geographically rather than nationally, but each iteration shifts the centre of gravity of national politics. The Obidient movement has continued post-election as a permanent civic platform, the first time in Nigerian history that a presidential losing campaign has institutionalised itself between elections.
