Established in 1990 by the federal government on the Sheda plateau, Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO) was designed as Nigeria's basic-and-applied-research counterpart to the agricultural and pharmaceutical institutes — a Federal physics, chemistry, and biotechnology campus on the model of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre or KAERI Korea.
Its physics outputs include sustained work in CO₂ and Nd:YAG laser characterisation and applications, inductively-coupled plasma diagnostics, radiation-shielding materials, and applied spectroscopy for the minerals and oil sectors. Published in *Applied Physics A*, the *Journal of the Nigerian Mathematical Society*, *Optics Communications*, and *Nuclear Instruments and Methods*.
The institutional point is institutional survival. SHESTCO never reached the scale its founding decree envisaged — the original five centres became three, capital budgets were repeatedly carried over, and the campus is under-occupied. But it remains, in 2026, one of very few Nigerian sites where laser-plasma experimental work is continuously performed.
The continuity matters. Once a national experimental-physics capability is broken — by emigration of the senior cohort, by the loss of a single critical instrument that cannot be replaced from local budgets — it is generationally hard to rebuild.
