Murtala assumes power

29 July 1975. Bloodless coup deposes Gowon while he is at the OAU summit in Kampala. Six months of 'with immediate effect' begin.

While Gowon was at the OAU summit in Kampala on 29 July 1975, a group of officers led by Brigadier Murtala Muhammed announced his removal. The coup was bloodless. Gowon went into exile in the UK and would not return for almost a decade.

Murtala's six months in office were the most consequential of any post-independence regime: a sweeping purge of the federal civil service ('Operation Deadwood'), creation of seven new states bringing the total to 19, relocation of the capital from Lagos to Abuja (Decree 6 of 1976), and a foreign policy that openly opposed apartheid South Africa and recognised the MPLA government in Angola against US wishes.
