Overview#
Zamfara is the gold state — the discovery of high-grade vein gold around Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and Bagega (early 2000s onward) reset the geo-political economy of north-western Nigeria. The same belt produced the 2010 Zamfara lead-poisoning crisis (the largest single mass lead-poisoning event in the world, >400 child deaths) and the gold-mining-and-banditry economy that has since destabilised the entire north-west.
Geology & Deposits#
Gold. Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru, Bagega, Birnin-Magaji, Talata-Mafara, Gusau — the southern Zamfara gold field. Vein-gold + alluvial. Estimated several hundred tonnes of contained Au across the belt. Lead-zinc. Co-occurs with gold — the principal contamination vector in the 2010 crisis. Other. Kaolin, granite, copper, manganese, salt — small. Hydrocarbons. None. Agricultural produce. Sorghum, millet, groundnut, sesame, cotton, rice (Talata-Mafara). Livestock. Major reservoir; now severely degraded by banditry.
Operators & Output#
- Hundreds of thousands of artisanal miners — most of the gold belt. - Multi-Trex Integrated Foods / Russel Smith / Thor (peripheral) — no significant industrial gold producer in Zamfara at 2024. - Federal Government emergency lead-remediation programme — Bagega (2010–2013, partial), Anka (incomplete).
Host-Community & Revenue#
No derivation. Gold royalties paid to the Federation Account are a small fraction of actual extraction; the Zamfara Sahara-to-Dubai gold smuggling corridor is the largest single illicit-mineral channel in the country. The 2019–2024 Zamfara mining ban (federal, by Buhari and Tinubu administrations alternately) was an attempt to break the gold-and-banditry nexus.
Current Status#
Producing: artisanal gold (continuous, illicit-heavy); sorghum, sesame, groundnut. Suspended: formal mining under federal ban (since 2019, lifted in patches). Threatened: pastoral and agricultural livelihoods across the entire state.
