Overview#
Sokoto is the country's phosphate state — the Sokoto Phosphate (Maastrichtian-age, Dukamaje formation) is the largest sedimentary phosphate body in West Africa, basis of the historic Sokoto Cement (Cement Company of Northern Nigeria, CCNN) Kalambaina plant. It also hosts the largest single concentration of limestone for cement production in the north-west, and the Goronyo Dam rice/wheat axis.
Geology & Deposits#
Phosphate. Dange-Shuni, Wurno, Tambuwal — Maastrichtian Sokoto group. Estimated >100 million tonnes of P₂O₅-rich rock. Limestone. Kalambaina-Sokoto — feeds BUA Cement Sokoto (formerly CCNN, 2 mtpa). Gypsum, kaolin, clay. Various. Salt. Gwadabawa (small). Gold. Isa, Sabon Birni — frontier; Zamfara gold-belt extension under banditry pressure. Hydrocarbons. None; the Sokoto Basin is shallow and oil-poor (NNPC's 1990s exploration was discouraging). Agricultural produce. Rice (Goronyo Dam), wheat (Rima Valley), millet, sorghum, sesame, hides. Livestock. Major cattle, sheep, camel reservoir.

- BUA Cement Sokoto — Kalambaina limestone, 2 mtpa. - Sokoto Phosphate Development Company (state) — exploration; no production at scale. - Smallholder rice + wheat (Goronyo).
Host-Community & Revenue#
No oil derivation. Solid-mineral royalties to the federation. The state's tax-and-FAAC base is among the lower thirds nationally; the phosphate-fertiliser industrial chain has been a "future-Sokoto" prospect for forty years without realisation.
Current Status#
Producing: BUA Cement Sokoto; rice + wheat (Goronyo); livestock. Frontier: phosphate-fertiliser industrial chain.
