Overview#
Rivers — historically the #1 oil-producing state — was overtaken by Akwa Ibom in absolute volume after 2005 but retains the densest concentration of hydrocarbon infrastructure in West Africa: the Port Harcourt Refining Co (PHRC, 210,000 bpd combined), Bonny Terminal, Nigeria LNG (Bonny Island, 22 mtpa across 6 trains), the Eleme Petrochemicals Company, the Notore Fertiliser Plant, the Indorama Eleme petrochemical and fertiliser complex, the Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP), and dozens of producing fields on OMLs 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 29, 49, etc. It is also the centre of the country's worst onshore oil-pollution case: Ogoni / Bodo / Goi.
Geology & Deposits#
Niger Delta — eastern shallow swamp & shallow offshore. Bonny-Light grade, stacked Agbada reservoirs. Key fields. Bomu (Ogoni — shut-in since 1993), Ebubu, Kpean, Yorla (all Ogoni — Shell-shut); Krakama, Cawthorne Channel, Awoba; Bonny terminal feeders; Soku (Bayelsa border but Bonny-routed); OML 11 (Renaissance), OML 17 (Heritage), OML 18 (Eroton), OML 24 (Newcross), OML 25 (Renaissance), OML 29 (Aiteo, see Bayelsa), OML 49 (Pillar), OML 53 (Seplat). Gas. The Bonny + Soku + Gbaran-Ubie feed system delivers >2.5 bcf/d to NLNG.
Operators & Output#
- Nigeria LNG (NLNG), Bonny Island — 22 mtpa across 6 trains; Train 7 under construction adds 8 mtpa. - Indorama Eleme Petrochemical & Fertiliser — privatised 2006; methanol, urea, fertiliser; one of Africa's largest single petchem complexes. - NNPC Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) — 60,000 bpd old + 150,000 bpd new = 210,000 bpd; rehabilitation completed, restart November 2024. - Renaissance Africa Energy — OMLs 11, 25 (ex-SPDC, post-2024 divestment). - Eroton E&P, Heritage Energy, Aiteo, Newcross — divested SPDC onshore assets across OMLs 17, 18, 29, 24.
Crude output: 400,000–600,000 bpd (state share). Gas: dominant national gas state by export volume.
Host-Community & Revenue#
Rivers is consistently a top-three derivation recipient. The Ogoni shut-in since 1993 (following the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) campaign and the November 1995 execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa) has frozen ~50,000 bpd of historic output. The HYPREP / Bodo clean-up under UNEP's 2011 report is the world's largest ongoing oil-spill remediation programme.
Current Status#
Producing: every named field outside Ogoni; NLNG; Indorama; PHRC restarting. Frozen: Ogoni acreage. Frontier: NLNG Train 7, deep-water tie-backs.
