Overview#
Ondo is one of the few oil-producing states without onshore wells — its acreage is offshore-shallow (Olokola coast) and bitumen-onshore (the Ondo bitumen belt is the largest unexploited bitumen deposit in Africa). It also hosts the historic Idanre cocoa belt, Akure granite quarries, and the Ifon kaolin.
Geology & Deposits#
Bitumen. Ondo bitumen belt (Agbabu, Ago-Pen, Ode-Aye, Ilubirin, Loda) — estimated 42 billion barrels of oil-equivalent in tar-sand form, the largest such deposit in Africa. Repeated tender rounds (2003, 2007, 2017) have failed to produce a commercial operator. Hydrocarbons (offshore). Aje field (OPL/OML 113) — Yinka Folawiyo Petroleum et al., first oil 2016, suspended 2021. Output mostly attributed to Lagos but spans the Ondo offshore boundary. Limestone. Owo-Akure axis. Granite & dimension stone. Akure, Ipogun, Igbara-Oke. Kaolin. Ifon, Erin-Ijesha-border. Glass-sand, dolomite, gemstone (sapphire, tourmaline). Owo plateau extensions. Cocoa. Idanre, Owo, Akure — Ondo is consistently Nigeria's #1 cocoa-producing state.
Operators & Output#

Host-Community & Revenue#
Ondo's 13% derivation entitlement was confirmed after 2004 (under the Onshore-Offshore Dichotomy Abolition Act) — the state receives a small but politically symbolic quarterly cheque. The bitumen belt is the central unrealised industrial story; the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) was established 2001.

Producing: cocoa (national leader), granite, kaolin. Suspended/frontier: Aje (offshore), bitumen (onshore — perennially "imminent").
