Pre-1500 — Ancient settlement#
The Niger plains south of the confluence — Ilorin, Offa, Igbomina, Ekiti-Kwara, Igbolo, Kakanda, Nupe, Bariba (Borgu), Bokobaru — are settled from at least the 9th century. Old Oyo (Oyo-Ile), the imperial capital of the Old Oyo Empire, lies in northern Kwara (Atisbo / Kishi area, now near the Niger Republic border).
1500 — 1804 — Pre-colonial polities#
Most of present-day Kwara is the northern marches of the Old Oyo Empire — the cavalry frontier where the Alaafin's heavy horse confronts the Nupe, the Bariba/Borgu and (after 1804) the Sokoto jihad. The Borgu kingdoms (Bussa, Nikki, Illo, Wawa) maintain an Anglo-French frontier disputed from the 1880s. Igbomina (Ila Orangun is the senior throne), Offa (Olofa) and Ekiti-Kwara (Omu-Aran, Isin) are tributary or allied Yoruba sub-kingdoms.
1804 — 1903 — The long 19th century#
Ilorin is the pivot. Established by the Yoruba general Afonja of Ilorin as a rebellion against the Alaafin Aole in the 1810s, Ilorin invites the Fulani Islamic scholar Shehu Alimi as religious adviser. After Afonja's death (1823, killed by his own Fulani allies), Alimi's son Abdulsalami establishes the Ilorin Emirate as the southernmost emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate — the first and only Fulani conquest of a major Yoruba city. The 1840 Battle of Osogbo halts Ilorin's further southern advance. The 16 February 1897 Battle of Ilorin between Sir George Goldie's Royal Niger Company and the Ilorin army (under Karara) ends in RNC victory.
1900 — 1960 — Colonial provinces#
Ilorin Province within Northern Nigeria — the only Yoruba-majority area assigned to the North in the colonial reorganisation, a decision the Yoruba political class never fully accepted. The 1898 Anglo-French Convention fixed the Nigeria-Dahomey border through Borgu, splitting the Bariba kingdoms between French Dahomey and British Nigeria. See Royal Niger Company charter.
1960 — present — State creation chain#
- 1960–67 — Northern Region.
- 27 May 1967 — Kwara State (capital Ilorin), one of Gowon's 12. Originally including Igala and most of present-day Kogi.
- 1976 — Igala Division transferred to Benue State.
- 27 August 1991 — Babangida hives off Kogi State (Ebira and Okun-Yoruba LGAs) from southern Kwara.
- 2003, 2007, 2011 — Kwara becomes the political base of Olusola Saraki and (after 2003) Bukola Saraki; the "Saraki dynasty" runs Kwara politics for two decades until the 2019 "O to ge" (enough is enough) movement breaks it. See Otoge 2019.
