Overview#

Kogi is the state of the Itakpe iron-ore / Ajaokuta Steel Complex — the most ambitious unfinished industrial project in Nigeria's history. It also has the Okaba/Ogboyaga coal seams (Mamu formation), the Obajana limestone (anchor of Dangote Cement's largest plant), and the Lokoja confluence marble and dolomite belt.

Geology & Deposits#

Iron-ore. Itakpe (~200 million tonnes proven, 36% Fe — the only economically extractable iron-ore body in Nigeria). Companion deposits at Agbaja (35–45% Fe, oolitic, requires beneficiation) and Chokochoko. Limestone. Obajana — the largest limestone body so-far developed in Nigeria; Dangote Cement Obajana is 13.25 mtpa, the single largest cement plant on the continent. Coal. Okaba, Ogboyaga, Inyi — Mamu formation, sub-bituminous; the historic source of Nigerian coal alongside Enugu. Marble & dolomite. Lokoja, Itobe. Bitumen. Western Kogi border (Loko, the western tail of the Ondo-Ogun bitumen belt) — uneconomic at current prices. Hydrocarbons. The Anambra-Benue Basin frontier runs north into Kogi (Ibaji, Idah).

Operators & Output#

- National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO), Itakpe — mine + concentrator. Built 1984, mothballed in 2014; partial restart 2020 with Russian contractor input; full restart pending Ajaokuta privatisation resolution. - Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd (ASCL) — 1.3 mtpa designed, never commissioned for full integrated steel-making; one of the longest-running corruption-and-privatisation case files in the country (the 2007 SOLGAS reversal, the 2019 Russia-Nigeria revival MoU). - Dangote Cement Obajana — 13.25 mtpa. - Zuma 828 Coal — Okaba, partly active.

Host-Community & Revenue#

No oil derivation. The Itakpe-Ajaokuta saga is the central national-resource case study of unrealised industrial development. The Obajana cement plant pays substantial royalties to the federation and IGR to Kogi.

Current Status#

Producing: Obajana cement (the country's biggest mineral cash-flow non-oil), Itakpe iron-ore (partial), Okaba coal (small). Dormant at scale: Ajaokuta Steel.
