Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
Kogi is the Confluence State — where the Niger meets the Benue at Lokoja — and was the most ethnically layered of the pre-colonial Middle Belt. Three deep kingdoms anchored the territory: the Igala Kingdom (founded c. 1400 by Ayagba Om'Idoko the elephant-hunter; capital Idah) — one of the great riverain states of West Africa, which conquered Benin's outer provinces in the 16th c. Atta Idoko Ame (r. c. 1687) extended Igala suzerainty as far east as the Anambra basin. The Nupe Kingdom (Bida-based; western Kogi LGAs of Lokoja, Kogi, Bassa, Ajaokuta, Lokoja LGA), founded c. 1531 by Tsoede; the Etsu Nupe ruled from Bida. The Okun Yoruba sub-kingdoms (Owe, Ijumu, Yagba, Bunu, Oworo, Abinu, Iyagba) — the easternmost Yoruba, with rulers titled Olu, Oba, Obaro, Alapata. South-east: Igbira (Ebira) of Okene — the Atta Igbira of Okene rules a Kwararafa-descended polity. North-east: Bassa-Nge (Nupe-related) and Bassa-Komo. The 1804 Sokoto jihad subordinated Nupe under Mallam Dendo (1810) and Idris (Etsu Nupe); the Igala fought the jihad to a stalemate. Reigning Attah of Igala: HRM Aliyu Obaje (d. 2012) → Idakwo Michael Ameh Oboni II (2013–24) → HRM Matthew Alaji Opaluwa Oguche-Akpa III (since 2024 — controversial selection). Ohinoyi of Ebira: HRM Alh. Ado Ibrahim (d. 2021) → Sani Onogu. Etsu Nupe: lies in Niger State but Nupe-Kogi remain his suffragans. Obaro of Kabba: HRM Solomon Dele Owoniyi.
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
Kogi was the gateway of British conquest — Lokoja was the first headquarters of the Royal Niger Company (Goldie's HQ, 1879) and of the Northern Nigeria Protectorate (Lugard's first capital, 1 Jan 1900). The first flag of Nigeria was hoisted at Lokoja. Sat first in Kabba Province, then split between Kabba Province (Northern Region) and Igala Division of Benue Province. Returned to Northern Region 1939.

Benue-Plateau / Kwara / Benue State military Governors (1967–1991) — parent states#
Kogi was split four ways: Okun Yoruba went to Kwara State (1967–91); Igala and Bassa went to Benue-Plateau State (1967–76) then Benue State (1976–91); Ebira-Okene sat in Kwara State (1967–91). Governors of parent states: Kwara — David Bamigboye (1967–75), Ibrahim Taiwo (1975–76, assassinated 13 Feb 1976), George Innih (1976–78), Paul Omu (1978–79), Adamu Atta (NPN, 1979–83). Kogi State carved out of Kwara + Benue States on 27 August 1991 by Babangida (capital Lokoja; 21 LGAs). • 1991–1992 — Col. Danladi Zakari (founding Military Administrator). • 1992–1993 — Alh.
