Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
Kebbi is the historic Kebbi Kingdom — one of the Banza Bakwai (the "bastard seven" Hausa states), founded c. 1517 by Muhammadu Kanta the Great (Kotal Kanta), a Lekawa Fulani-Hausa warlord who had served under the Songhai Empire's Askia Muhammad. Kanta defeated a combined Songhai-Aïr force at the Battle of Tara (c. 1517), declaring Kebbi's independence — the only Sudanic state ever to defeat Songhai in pitched battle. Capital at Birnin Kebbi. Kebbi controlled the Argungu-Sokoto-Niger floodplain and the salt routes from Bilma. The Sokoto jihad (1804–08) toppled the Hausa Argungu and Birnin Kebbi rulers, but Sarkin Kebbi Karari survived in exile and his successors fought a century-long resistance war from Argungu — the only Hausa kingdom that never permanently submitted to Sokoto. The annual Argungu Fishing Festival (since c. 1934) commemorates the 1934 peace between Sokoto and Argungu after the 1903 British conquest dissolved the conflict. Other polities: Zuru chiefdom (non-Muslim Lela, Dakarkari/C'Lela, Kambari peoples of southern Kebbi), Yauri Emirate (founded c. 1110 — pre-Hausa Songhai outpost), Gwandu Emirate (the western wing of the Sokoto Caliphate under Abdullahi dan Fodio from 1815). Reigning Emir of Gwandu: HRH Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar (since 2005) — heir of Abdullahi dan Fodio's western caliphate. Emir of Argungu (Sarkin Kebbi): HRH Muhammadu Mera (since 2018). Emir of Yauri: HRH Dr Muhammadu Zayyanu Abdullahi (since 2015). Emir of Zuru: HRH Sa'idu Muhammad Sami II.
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
Sokoto Province of the Northern Protectorate. British conquest of Sokoto on 15 March 1903 (Battle of Sokoto) settled Kebbi without resistance; the Argungu war ended automatically. The 1934 Argungu Festival institutionalised peace. Sat in Northern Region 1939–67.

Kebbi sat in North-Western State (1967–76; capital Sokoto), then Sokoto State (1976–91). Governors of parent state across this period: Usman Faruk (1967–75), Yakubu Muazu (1975–78), Mohammed Magoro (1978–79), Garba Nadama (NPN, 1979–83), then Buhari/IBB-era Administrators. • 1979–1983 — Alh. Kebbi State excised from Sokoto on 27 August 1991 by Babangida (capital Birnin Kebbi; 21 LGAs). • 1991–1992 — Col. Ibrahim Bunu Sherif (founding Military Administrator). • 1992–1993 — Alh.
