Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
Katsina is one of the original Hausa Bakwai, founded c. 1100 CE by Kumayo, son of Bayajidda. Sarki Muhammadu Korau (c. 1445–95) was the first Muslim king; Ibrahim Sura (c. 1493–98) made it the leading scholarship centre of the Central Sudan — the Katsina school of Abdulkarim al-Maghili produced *Risalat al-Muluk* and the Islamic constitutional theory adopted later by Sokoto. Through the 16th–18th c. Katsina was the wealthiest Hausa state, dominating the trans-Saharan trade to Ghadames and Tripoli, until ruined by the 1804 jihad. The last Habe king Magajin Halidu was killed 1807; Umaru Dallaji installed as first Fulani emir. The Maradi Habe state (now Niger Republic) was founded by Katsina refugees who refused conversion — they raided southern Katsina throughout the 19th c. Daura Emirate (the legendary first town of Bayajidda's snake-slaying) is in northern Katsina. Reigning Emir of Katsina: HRH Dr Abdulmumini Kabir Usman (since 2008, after Muhammadu Kabir Usman, 1981–2008). Emir of Daura: HRH Dr Umar Faruq Umar (since 2007) — Buhari's home throne. Colonial era (1900–1960)#
Katsina Province of the Northern Protectorate from 1903 (peaceful capitulation after Kano's fall). The Katsina Training College (founded 1922) — the first Western secondary school in northern Nigeria — produced Tafawa Balewa, Aminu Kano, Yusuf Maitama Sule, Shehu Shagari, Isa Kaita and most of the Northern political elite. Sir Muhammadu Dikko (Emir 1906–44) was the great moderniser. Merged into the Northern Region 1939.

North-Central / Kaduna State military Governors (1967–1987) — parent state#
Katsina sat in North-Central State (1967–76) then Kaduna State (1976–87) until 23 September 1987 when Babangida excised Katsina State. Governors of parent state across this period: Abba Kyari (1967–75), Usman Jibrin (1975–78), Lawrence Onoja (1978–79), Balarabe Musa (PRP, 1979–81 — impeached), Lawal Kaita (NPN, 1983), then military Administrators.

Katsina State created 23 September 1987 by Babangida (capital Katsina; 34 LGAs). • 1987–1989 — Col. Lawrence Anebi Onoja (founding Military Administrator) — coincidentally also a former Kaduna governor. • 1989–1990 — Col. Sanusi Mohammed. • 1990–1992 — Col. John Madaki. • 1992–1993 — Alh. Saidu Barda (NRC) — Third Republic civilian Governor. • 1993–1996 — Col. Lawal Ja'afaru Isa / Col. Joseph Akaagerger. • 1996–1998 — Col. Habibu Shuaibu. • 1998–1999 — Col. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande.
