Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
Kano is the commercial heart of the Central Sudan for a thousand years. Founded c. 999 CE by Bagauda, grandson of Bayajidda, as one of the original Hausa Bakwai. The Kano Chronicle (compiled c. 1890 from earlier sources) records 48 Habe (Hausa) kings between 999 and 1807. Sarki Muhammad Rumfa (r. 1463–99) built the city walls, introduced Islam as state religion, and established the Kurmi Market. By the 17th–18th c. Kano was the entrepôt of the trans-Saharan trade — kola from Asante, salt from Bilma, slaves from the Middle Belt, indigo and leather to Tripoli. The 1804 Sokoto jihad under Sulaimanu (Sullubawa Fulani) overthrew the last Habe king Alwali II in 1807 and installed the present Fulani Sullubawa dynasty. Emir Muhammadu Bello (r. 1883–93) reigned at the peak of the late-Caliphate slave economy. Reigning Emir of Kano (post-2024 restoration): HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II (Dabo) — restored by the Abba Yusuf government on 23 May 2024 after his 2020 deposition by Ganduje; Aminu Ado Bayero (Buhari-era appointee, 2020–24) contests in court. The four jihad-era subordinate emirates: Rano, Gaya, Karaye, Dutse (now Jigawa). Pre-jihad: Sarkin Dala, Sarkin Kurmi, Madakin Kano lineages.
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
Kano Province of the Northern Protectorate. British conquest 3 Feb 1903 (Battle of Kotorkoshi) — Emir Aliyu Babba fled to Sokoto, was deposed; Lugard installed Muhammadu Abbass. The 1953 Kano Riots (15–18 May, ~36 dead) — anti-Igbo violence after the AG's "self-government in 1956" motion — were the first ethnic pogrom of decolonising Nigeria and the political turning point that produced regional autonomy in 1954.
Northern Region Premier (1954–1966)#
- 1954–1966 — Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto (NPC) — Kano sat within the Northern Region.
Kano State military Governors (1967–1979)#
Kano State created 27 May 1967 (Gowon's twelve-state structure; capital Kano). • 1967–1975 — Police Commissioner Audu Bako — legendary public-works era; built Tiga Dam, Bagauda Dam, Audu Bako College of Agriculture. • 1975–1978 — Col. Sani Bello (later ambassador, businessman). • 1978–1979 — Col. Ishaya Shekarri.
Second Republic civilian Governor (1979–1983)#
- 1979–1983 — Alh. Abubakar Rimi (PRP) — famously fought the Emir Ado Bayero in the "Rimi-Ado Bayero salutation crisis" of July 1981 (riots in which the Emir's adviser Bala Mohammed was murdered).
- 1983 — Alh. Sabo Bakin Zuwo (PRP) — colourful, sacked by 31 Dec 1983 coup after 3 months; famously found with ₦3.4 m in cash in his bedroom.

- 1984–1985 — Air Cdre. Hamza Abdullahi.
- 1985–1988 — Col. Mohammed Abdullahi Wase (later road named for him in Abuja).
- 1988–1990 — Col. Idris Garba — December 1991 Kano "Reinhard Bonnke" Christian-Muslim riots (~300+ dead).

- 1992–1993 — Alh. Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya (NRC) — Third Republic civilian Governor (also, Jigawa State excised from Kano on 27 Aug 1991 by IBB).
