Overview#
Jigawa has no oil and almost no industrial minerals at scale — its resource economy is agricultural (rice, wheat, sesame, sugar-cane, gum-arabic) and pastoral, with glass-sand at Birnin Kudu and a long tradition of Hausa hide-and-skin tanning. The state is, in 2024, the federal anchor for the Hadejia-Jama'are River Basin wheat and rice programmes.
Geology & Deposits#
Silica/glass-sand. Birnin Kudu deposits — the basis of the historic Northern Glass Company, Birnin Kudu (1980s, defunct). Kaolin, gypsum, laterite. Small scattered outcrops; uneconomic. Hydrocarbons. No proven reserves; the Chad Basin frontier lies to the east in Yobe/Borno. Agricultural produce. Hadejia-Jama'are fadama: rice (Hadejia, Auyo), wheat (Hadejia plains, fed by Tiga and Challawa dams), sugar-cane (Hadejia Valley), sesame, gum-arabic (Birniwa, Kirikasamma, Maigatari border zone). Livestock. One of the country's largest cattle, sheep and camel reservoirs; the Maigatari International Cattle Market is the Sahelian gateway to the central markets.
Operators & Output#
- Dangote Sugar Refinery (planned Hadejia outgrower scheme) and BUA Sugar (Lafiagi) sourcing. - WACOT Rice / Olam Hadejia — milled-rice integrators. - Smallholders — gum-arabic exports through Maiduguri (in better security years) and Kano.
Host-Community & Revenue#
No derivation. FAAC + IGR + Niger Basin Development Authority allocations. Climate-related stress on the Hadejia floodplain (the Komadugu-Yobe river system feeding Lake Chad) is the central environmental issue.
Current Status#
Producing: rice, wheat, sugar-cane, sesame, gum-arabic, livestock. Dormant: industrial glass.
