Jigawa is overwhelmingly Hausa-Fulani; Manga (a Bornu-related language) survives in the north-east.

Notable literary and political moments#
- The Hadejia–Sokoto Wars (1850s–1860s) produced an early body of Hausa Ajami war-poetry, much of it preserved in the Northern History Research Scheme archives.
