Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
The Gombe plateau lay between three civilisations: the Bolewa kingdoms of Fika and Gombe-Abba (the original pre-jihad Bolewa state, ruled by the *Mai Bole* from c. 1500), the Tangale-Waja-Tula acephalous hill peoples (Kaltungo, Billiri, Tula — Tangale resistance to the jihad was unbroken), and the Jukun (Kwararafa) tributaries of the lower Gongola. The Emirate of Gombe was founded by Buba Yero (a Fulani jihadist commander under Usman dan Fodio) c. 1804 — capital first at Gombe-Abba, moved by the British to Doma in 1913 and then to Gombe town in 1919. The historic Emir of Akko (Bolewa line at Kumo) and the Mai Tangale also recognised today. Reigning Emir of Gombe: HRM Alh. Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III (since 2014).
