Major indigenous languages#
- Gbagyi (Gwari) — the largest indigenous language of the FCT, spoken across all six Area Councils.
- Koro — Bwari, Karu (now mostly Nasarawa).
- Bassa — Abaji, Kwali.
- Gade — Abaji.
- Gwandara — Karshi, Karu.
Lingua francas#
Hausa dominates the markets and motor parks; English is the language of administration and the diplomatic quarter; Nigerian Pidgin is the inter-ethnic lingua franca of the unplanned settlements (Mararaba, Nyanya, Karu — most across the Nasarawa border).
Notable#
The Aso Rock complex, the National Assembly, the Presidential Villa and the Supreme Court all sit on land that was historically Gbagyi farmland.
